TOT: TOTAL EMISSIONS (comparable with WTW: Well-to-Wheel)
OPS: OPERATIONAL EMISSIONS (comparable with TTW: Tank-to-Wheel)
ENE: ENERGY PROVISION, (comparable with WTT: Well-to-Tank)
E.I.: EMISSION INTENSIY (CO2e in gr/tkm)
All distances for transportation activities are based on shortest feasible distance (SFD), except AIR, which is based on great circle distances (GCD). For more detailed information, see the link «Methodology».
CO2e emission values
CarbonCare calculated according to ISO 14083:2023. Accordingly, CO2e-(equivalents) are published as follows.
CO2e calculation methodology
If you want to know more details about the methodology, the basics and ISO 14083:2023
New ISO Norm 14083:2023 in a nutshell
This new norm was published by the ISO organisation in April 2023. It specifies the rules for calculating CO2 emissions caused by transport and logistics activities. This norm is complementary to several existing ISO standards. The certification company S.G.S. Tecnos, S.A. has validated and approved the CarbonCare calculator. (see validation report).
Following some of the major components of the new norm which have been incorporated in the CarbonCare calculator. For more detailed information please click on “Methodology”.
All emission factors are adapted according to ISO 14083:2023. ISO uses different emission factors for North America and Europe (Rest of World).
Reporting of the CO2 values is more detailed on 2 levels (per Transport/Shipment and per Organisation/Company)
New designations for CO2 values: TOTAL / OPERATION / ENERGY (instead of WTW/TTW/ WTT)
New CO2 indicator: Emission Intensity expressed in gr/TKM
CO2 emissions from transhipment activities in cargo terminals are included in the emission values
“Cooling” (or Reefer) is available for all modes of transport (according to ISO: “Transport Chain Elements” – like ROAD, AIR, RAIL, SEA, IWW, FERRY & HUB). New is also that “Refrigerant Leaking” is included
All distances are calculated according to the “shortest feasible distance” (SFD) except AIR which still must be calculated according to “great circle distances” (GCD).
Load factors are available (e.g., 0%-100%) for all ROAD transports, FERRY has the options for ROPAX and RORO ferries (small (<5000T) & large (5000-15000T), and IWW has more ships available with a more detailed classification.
Please note that the distances used on the CO2 calculator on www.carboncare.org continue to be based on the great circle distance (response times with SFD too long).
